Poetry blogging: a living active absence

Heading west past Congress
B Northcut

Once I stood next to your
barely living body
my knees buckling
between your every shallow breath

Once I enveloped your
entire hungering hand
swept along on
eddies of our tears trust and sweat

All that I knew of you
now just a mereness
a living active absence
embraces and protects
against the rushing wake
trailing your burdening presence
or even its memory

Driving past where
I am told you are living
a cool vacancy surrounds
crisp dry whispering
a clean sheet settling
over a recovering sleeper
